Bookmarked! 2011 overview

Bookmarked! 2011 to feature award-winning author/illustrator Molly Bang

Building on the success of its inaugural Bookmarked! festival in the spring of 2010, Lucy’s Book Club (LBC) has announced the dates and featured author for 2011.

Three-time Caldecott Honor Award winner Molly Bang, who has written and illustrated more than 30 books for children, will join local celebrity-heroes and hundreds of Wake County families in celebrating the delights of children’s literature and the special joys of reading together. She will be the second recipient of the Lucy Daniels Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to children’s literature that supports social and emotional health.

In crafting works that capture, as Publisher Weekly has noted, “the voice and feelings of a young child,” Ms. Bang has contributed to the body of children’s literature that “treats childhood emotions with respect.” In fact, Ms. Bang has cited Judith ViorstBookmarked! 2010’s featured author and the first recipient of the Lucy Daniels Award—as one of her inspirations.

Ms. Bang also enjoys doing workshops for students, teachers and parents that involve writing and illustration. She has written a book for adults about how the structure of pictures affects our emotions called Picture This: How Pictures Work (the basis of a special workshop she will offer for adults May 15).  Recently, she has written several books that teach young children about natural science, including My Light and Living Sunlight. 2011’s Bookmarked! will kick off on Friday, May 6, and continue through Sunday, May 22. The festival will encompass Children’s Book Week (May 2-8) and National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day (May 3). Events will include free public readings by local celebrity-heroes, a Family Fun Concert May 15 in Raleigh, a Lucy's Book Club Book Fair at Quail Ridge Books, and, of course, special events featuring Ms. Bang May 14-15.
