What is Lucy's Book Club for Children?
Lucy's Book Club (LBC) is an educational outreach program to the Wake County, NC community and our online friends from the Lucy Daniels Center for Early Childhood. The Center has been recognized locally, regionally, and nationally for its innovative mental health and child development programs for children.
Why should I join Lucy's Book Club?
There is a wealth of literature available for young children, but sifting through all of the books out there can sometimes prove to be an overwhelming task for parents and caregivers. It can be difficult to determine which books are age- and developmentally appropriate for young children. In addition, parents and caregivers often seek specific topics to help their children with themes such as separation and saying good-bye, welcoming a baby to the family, or strengthening self-confidence.
Combining the Center's expertise in early childhood education and mental health with Wake County libraries' vast children's literature resources, a panel (of Lucy Daniels Center staff and a Wake County librarian) reviews books and creates topic-specific booklists that support various child development themes.

What does Lucy's Book Club offer children?
The aim of Lucy's Book Club is to support emotional wellbeing while also promoting early literacy, imaginative play, creative thinking, problem solving, and self-regulation skills. We also aim to educate parents and caregivers about appropriate themes in early childhood literature. The panel chooses topics and selects books based on a variety of criteria including message and plot, illustrations, diversity, gender, and availability, both in the public library and for sale at a low to moderate price.
A child's ability to communicate, develop relationships, resolve conflicts, and cope with the challenges of everyday life takes time, practice, and patience. Reading together is one way to explore such topics with your child.
Each LBC booklist includes 10 books divided into three age-appropriate groups: birth to three, birth to six, and three to six years old. Online, we also provide a list of additional book titles for each topic. We have recommended reading material for parents on each topic as well.
The joy of reading is one of the best gifts you can give your child. Reading together, even just a few minutes each day, encourages a life-long passion for reading and helps to establish a healthy emotional bond between parent and child. We look forward to exploring and sharing the world of early childhood literacy with you.
